Rosario Central celebrate Argentina title by mistake after late Boca Juniors winner

Rosario Central players and fans celebrated winning Argentina's annual title, only to discover a dramatic late Boca Juniors goal had denied them.

Rosario Central players and supporters mistakenly celebrated winning Argentina's annual league title on Saturday, with fans even invading the pitch, before discovering that a last-gasp Boca Juniors winner had denied them the trophy.

Central defeated Estudiantes de Río Cuarto 2-0 at the Gigante de Arroyito stadium and appeared set to finish top of the annual standings, with Boca being held to a goalless draw by Defensa y Justicia.

However, Enner Valencia struck in the 95th minute at La Bombonera to secure a dramatic 1-0 victory for Boca, taking them to 63 points for the season -- one ahead of Central.

The late goal sparked confusion more than 300 kilometres away in Rosario, where players and supporters were following events in Boca's match.

Central's celebrations began after their own final whistle, with players climbing the fences separating them from supporters and fans entering the pitch.

Despite Valencia's goal, confusion over whether the strike would stand following a possible foul on goalkeeper Matías Borgogno led to further celebrations among Central's players and fans.

However, the goal was allowed to stand and Boca held on for victory, leaving Central's players in tears as their premature celebrations turned to disappointment.

"We got confused. We celebrated too early because we got carried away by the crowd," Central coach Jorge Almirón said afterwards.

Despite the disappointment, Central's supporters gave their players a standing ovation following their victory, which had come courtesy of goals from Julián Fernández and Emanuel Coronel.

Meanwhile, Boca captain Leandro Paredes celebrated securing the title in dramatic fashion.

"I don't have the words to describe what I'm feeling right now," Paredes said.

"I kept believing until the very last second. We deserved this, and we've accomplished it. I came back for this. Throughout my entire career, I dreamed of becoming a champion on this pitch."

Boca's triumph also secured direct qualification for the Copa Libertadores, with Rodolfo Arruabarrena's side still competing for further silverware in the Copa Sudamericana and Copa Argentina.
